cs5 brushes Photoshop Brushes Tutorial – Coloring

In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create an effect like this. Very simple and short. Some of you will recognize the tutorial. You’re right, it’s already at deviantArt, but I still get so much requests, so .. here it comes :)

Step 1

Start with a new file and choose any size you want (I took 560×226). Paint the layer black and create a new layer (!).

Step 2

Get some brushes from here and install them. Now set white as foregroundcolor, choose one (or more) of the brushes and add them by clicking on the image.

Step 3

Duplicate the layer, use gaussian blur (~5px) and set the oppacity of the layer to ~40%.

Step 4

Create a new layer and use the big 300px brush with 2 colors you want to paint over the picture. Take care: The 2 colors have to be in the same layer!

Step 5

Set the layer on color and create a new layer (and press D! – black and white as colors). Use render -> clouds and then the gaussian blur (about 10px). Set the layer on vivid light. Your result should look like this.

Optional Step

If the glow isn’t strong enough: Take the 100px pencilbrush, set white as color and set the oppacity of the pencilbrush to ~20%. Now you can add by simple clicking very nice highlights (same works with black as color).

Hello r0man, These things you're creating are really awesome! Thanks for your effor! Im working with Photoshop for like 3 years now and I never have done a think like is shown on top of this site. Looks really cool and interesting! So I've tried to do on my own but unfortunately I failed at Step 5. >_< Maybe you can help me to continue and can explain this Step again? I really would appreciate you for this pleasure ^^ It would help alot if you explain in german =P Thanks for listening, b4ttl3m4st3r

Ok sorry just me being dumb, got it.

This cant be done in CS3 i swear to god.

There is no such thing as "color" in CS3. At least i cant find it. Its not in the Layer menu. Thanks!

Hey, i don't understand the part, when you have to take the big 300 pixel brush.

Is it possible to create this with another background (not black)? If so, how? Thanks

wow! first tutorial with such a great effect, thanks!

First thing I've created via Photoshop! Very easy to follow... :)

Thanks for the tutorial. Works brilliantly with amazing results.

Dude, you are the best, I've been searching the net for this kinda stuff, your's is the best. :D Thank you!!!!

Dear Mr.R0man How do you do ? I would like to know ,may I using the brush by your design on business ? Your early reply on the matter will be highly appreciated. Your faithfully, Mavis E-mail:kmon25@gmail.com 98/07/15

Can you give me a reason why should we use render>clouds before using Gaussian blur (step 5)? Why don't just straightly give it a blur? And why do you recommend vivid light instead of overlay (step 5)?

Bertha: Layer effects - Color :)

what do you mean 'color' on step 5?

ive figure it out.. haha.. thnx!

i cant do the D thing... theres no "color" in my layer tab..

great tut. not so detailed that im sitting here for hours eading it but enough to be easily done by anyone. excelent. sorry for spelling =}

Probably use a higher quality brush.

my picture keeps coming out quite grainy what can I do to fix it ?

Great tutorial! Thx a lot!

really a great tutorial. =) thank you!! am gonna watch for ur other tuts. hehe.. :D

Foreground color: black Background color: white Thats all :)

I'm using photoshop cs4 and when I press the "D" nothing happens, wat is exactly the meaning of this hotkey? HELP ME :D

German version: "Strahlendes Licht"

Hai there, what do you mean with "set the layer on vivid light?" Think its a main step - i still see the clouds of the Cloud-Render :/

Check your mails!

Hi there... i really dig ur tutorials and i like ur portfolio and brushes but my english isnt that good so i dont understand evry step of ur tutorial here... why dont u make it in german? :D btw which photoshop did u use? ( i got cs4 but im new ). thanx

this was so cool and yet so simple plus i got some awesome brushes out of it THANKS!

Doesn't matter, I downloaded the right brush pack this time!

What brush did you use from your pack and what size should i use?

At the top of your layers window you will find a selection box. There you have to choose 'color'.

Set the layer on color I really dont get what to do here.

You dont have to mix them, you have to change the layer effect (at the top of the layer window).

hei there, i'm new in photoshoping things. just wanna ask, how to mix the color layer with the ray layer? thanks

Hi.I'm new in using photoshop. I try to make this tutorial that you put here.I make it to step four, but in the step five that you said to put the layer in color, etc... I don't know to make this step. Please help me. My email is allorroctrd@hotmail.com

Another good way to colorize for step #4 is with gradients. (I just learned what a gradient is, so the effect was very pretty!)

I just figured that out...and was blushing at my own silliness! I'm looking for more of your tutorials now. It was very simple and the results were stunning!!!

Set the foreground color to black and the background color to white. Thats it :)

I didn't understand the "and press D! - black and white as colors" [I'm a newbie], but even without it my first tutorial attempt turned out beautiful! Thank you r0man! :-)

With 'apophysis'.

how did you make the original brush to create the colorized brush?
